The skies of Queenstown
On a clear night sky here in Queenstown, we are treated with an unspoiled view of the magical Milky Way. Our mountain peaks make the perfect backdrop while the skies sparkle above – spot well known constellations including the Southern Cross and the Magellanic Clouds. Our winter nights are particularly good for photo opportunities as the longer evenings and darker skies allow for a full night of photography. The Aurora Australis has been appearing quite often over the past few months, adding something even more magical to your night sky photography here in Queenstown.
Thanks to recent advances in digital photography, more people now have to opportunity to capture our universe in a photograph using a DSLR camera. Whether you’re an eager amateur or a professional photographer, there is so much to experience and explore when it comes to astrophotography.
On the long, darker nights we will be treated to a spectacular line up of:
- The Milky Way
- Southern Cross
- Alpha Centauri
If you’re planning to head out on a stargazing and photography adventure, in order to get the best results, you will need to make sure that you are far enough from the lights of the town. To get the perfect shot of the Milky Way, you’ll need to make sure that there is nothing polluting the sky with light – such as the moon or cars that may drive by.
Equipment you will need:
- DSLR camera
- Wide angle lens
- Star chart (or app)
- Warm clothing
- Ensure lens is set to widest aperture
- Set the shutter to the longest possible (or bulb)
- Set the ISO to the highest number
- Change the White Balance to Tungsten
- Focus on infinity and lock the focus
- Use a remote release or self timer to take the photo
