Sport in Taupo

Sport isn’t always the first thing that comes to mind when people think of Taupo, but in reality Taupo is sportperson’s paradise.

Whether as a spectator or participant, the great Lake Taupo and the surrounding area offers unparalleled opportunity to enjoy a wide variety of sport.

The most obvious class of sport in Taupo is water sport.  Visitors to the area can rent boats and jet skis for the purpose of water-skiing, tubing, or just a cruise around the lake.  Kayaks and stand-up paddle boards are also available for hire from the Taupo waterfront.

For another form of skiing, the snow fields of Mt Ruapehu are just over an hour’s drive from town.  There’s also ample opportunity to get out by mountain bike on Taupo’s many surrounding trails.  For those with a competitive spirit, regular races take place throughout the year.

Golf is another popular Taupo sporting venture.  From the manicured courses winding through Taupo’s surrounding hills, to mini-golf in town, to the lakefront chipping contest; there is ample opportunity to test every aspect of your golf game – and even win a few prizes along the way.

Without a doubt, however, the ultimate in Taupo sport is for the endurance athletes and their fans.  The Taupo-Rotorua 100k Flyer takes place annually, with road cyclists traversing the course between the two popular tourist centres.  Additionally, Taupo plays host to two official Ironman events each year, representing the ultimate in elite endurance event performance.  The Half Ironman takes place in December, and every March, thousands of athletes and spectators descend on Taupo for New Zealand’s only Ironman qualification event.

At the end of a long day, participants and fans alike need a quiet place to rest their sore muscles (or cheering voices).   For this, there’s no better place than The Cove, Taupo’s luxury lakefront accommodation.  Take in the views as you soak in your private balcony spa pool and toast a job well done.
