The Te Iringa trail is a technical track that originated as a hunter’s access track into the Kaimanawa Forest. It has become a very special backcountry experience for expert mountain bikers who are keen to navigate steep hills, stream crossings, boggy wetlands and fallen trees. Bike Taupo has carried out significant work on the track and cleared some of the fallen trees to reduce the amount of bike pushing and carrying required. There are, however, still some long bike carry sections and challenging terrain so this ride is best attempted by experienced mountain bikers who want a real backcountry experience.

The full 38km return ride will take 2 days so you will need to be prepared to spend the night in the Oamaru Hut. There is the option to make just a day trip by walking/riding to the summit of Mt Te Iringa then riding back down the highly technical descent.

Maps are available from the Department of Conservation and the Taupo and Turangi i-Sites.
