Ten days on the South Island

All roads on the South Island lead from Christchurch – and with ten days to travel, you can see and do more than you thought possible.

Christchurch is the epicentre of New Zealand’s South Island – where all great journey’s begin. If you are hiring a campervan or motorhome this will be your ‘starting point’ – companies such as Cheapa Campa offer great deals on two, four and six-berth vehicles for cost-effective travel.

Spend Day 1 and Day 2 around Christchurch staying at a holiday park which will allow you to see some of the local tourist attractions. The Gondola, which offers birds’ eye views above Crater Rim on the Port Hills, and the latest  attraction at Canterbury Museum, ‘Quake City’, are great places to get a feel for what’s going on in Christchurch above and below ground!

On Day 3, head approximately 6 hours south to Dunedin. The journey there will take you through beautiful scenic coastline and regional towns. On Days 6 and 7, explore Doubtful Sound, Te Anau and Milford Sound – you’ll be stunned by the scenery of the Southern Scenic Route, one of New Zealand’s most beautiful drives.

By Day 8, it’s time to roll into New Zealand’s adventure capital – Queenstown. Spend as much time as you can here – from snow season to the peak of summer, there’s always an endless list of places to go, things to do and food to eat! And the best part is it’s a cruisy day drive back to Christchurch – just over seven hours travel time will deliver you back to where the journey began. Happy travels!
