No visit to Rotorua is complete without enjoying one or more of the North Island city’s spectacular thermal attractions.
Start your day with a morning walk around Kuirau Park. This free public park is situated on the western side of the city centre. Follow the tracks around the mud pools and steaming lakes. Dip your toes in the sheltered thermal pool next to the lake as the steam swirls around you.
A short drive from the centre of Rotorua is Whakarewarewa, New Zealand’s only living thermal village. Join a guided tour through the village to experience a traditional Maori village environment. You will be entertained by the Whakarewarewa cultural group, Te Pakira, then enjoy a traditional hangi meal, cooked with the steam created by the natural geothermal activity.
After lunch, head across the road to the Rotorua Golf Course. Also known as ‘Arikikapakapa’, meaning the gentle sound of plopping mud! The Rotorua Golf Course offers a unique geothermal golfing experience.
The picturesque course provides variety and challenge, with many holes played over and around dormant and active thermal areas. This easy walking course has an excellent layout and provides for both the novice and more experienced player. Relax at the club house after your game with a New Zealand beer or wine.
To end your day of geothermal action head to the Polynesian Spa, situated on the eastern side of the city centre, on the edge of Lake Rotorua. Relax and re-energise in the popular Adult Pools and Priest Spa. This area offers seven pools all fed with hot mineral spring water. The pool temperatures range from 39˚C to 42˚C and all have stunning lake views.
Rotorua is a great family destination with plenty of attractions and activities to keep everyone happy during family holiday, weekend getaway or even a day trip.
