This is My Idea of a Real Holiday

As a wife and mother of two teenage children, I want a holiday where I don't have to organise everything. This is the holiday for me.

When you have a husband and two teenage children, trying to find a holiday to please everyone is so hard, it’s tempting to stay home. That was before I went on a holiday with Wilsons Abel Tasman.

The brochures looked idyllic enough to interest my daughter, Jade, and the sea kayaking seemed exciting enough to interest the men in my life, my husband Jamie and son Drew. The big appeal for me was the fact that I wouldn’t have much to organise.

All I had to do was get the family to Nelson, book one night’s accommodation then Wilsons Abel Tasman took care of the rest. We were picked up at the door to start five days of a real break away from the stresses of modern living.

Our Guides, Lodge and Boat hosts made it so easy for each of us to get the holiday we wanted, leaving us to enjoy our quality family time.

The Wilson family has lived in the region for 8 generations. They’ve done all their pioneering and now they don’t believe in roughing it.

Being hosted by such an established local family meant we could trust their advice and rely on them to take us on a journey through the park without wasting our energy on schedules and decisions.

Transport along the National Park coast was by a sleek, modern catamaran with bar and bathroom facilities on board.

There were passengers, walkers and kayakers on day trips aboard the catamaran, some with only two hours to see the Abel Tasman. That’s not my idea of a holiday but some people had busy schedules.

Our accommodation seemed wickedly indulgent. The Wilsons have built two Lodges right on the beach on their historic freehold land in the National Park.

We chose the 5-day trip stayed 2 nights each Lodge, giving us more time to laze on the beach, or explore more of the Park. The 3-day option, with one night at each Lodge, is for people who are short of time.

Jade and I loved the ensuite bathrooms and hot showers. Jamie and Drew were more interested in the local beer served at the in-house bar.

The best part was being assured that the Wilson’s team is committed to preserving the National Park for future generations. Guilt-free indulgence is the best way to relax.

Through the day, we could each choose different options: walk, kayak, laze on the beach or take a boat cruise.

Then, we would meet up for a pre-dinner drink in the gardens beside the sea before a dinner of local specialties cooked for us by our cheerful hosts.

With no need to worry about schedules and safety, or even decisions on where, when and what to eat, we returned home relaxed and revived. I couldn’t ask for more from a holiday.
