Train Journeys in New Zealand

The best way to both relax while on holiday and still drink in all of New Zealand's magnificent scenery is by adding a train journey to your adventure!

Train travel in New Zealand is most popular from Auckland to Wellington and continuing to Christchurch via the Interislander Ferry. Other rail journeys connect the east and the west coast of the South Island with a trip from Christchurch to Greymouth, let you escape the city and spend a night in Tongariro National Park, and tour the Marlborough vineyards in Blenheim. No matter what your interests are, there isn’t a holiday that couldn’t be made a little more exciting (and luxurious!) with the addition of scenic train journey.

The TranzAlpine carries travelers along the 223 kilometres between Christchurch and Greymouth. Passengers will journey across the deep ravines of the Waimakariri River and cross the striking farmland in the Canterbury Plains. As you traverse the breathtaking Southern Alps, the unforgettable views of the alpine landscape will leave you speechless.

Northern Explorer

The Northern Explorer brings travelers along the length of New Zealand’s North Island, departing from both Auckland and Wellington.  Aboard this train you will journey through picturesque country towns, past fertile farmlands, and along scenic coasts. The train also passes through Tongariro National Park which features three incredible volcanic mountains, dense beech forests, and so much more.

Dunedin Railways

Departing from Dunedin’s beautiful railway station, the Taieri Gorge Railway begins its scenic journey into some of New Zealand’s ever-changing, spectacular scenery. The train travels through the Southern parts of Dunedin and climbs into the Taieri Gorge before continuing to Pukerangi. The journey will stop or slow down at various points along the way for photos where you can disembark and stretch your legs and enjoy the best that nature has to offer.

Coastal Pacific

Journeying between Picton and Christchurch, the Coastal Pacific Train route borders the Pacific Ocean for a day of inspiring views. Hop off in Kaikoura and enjoy some eco-tourism activities like swimming with dolphins and whale watching! This train also connects with the Intersilander ferry making for seamless travel between the North and South Islands.

Bay of Islands Vintage Railway

The Bay of Islands Vintage Railway is one of a kind because, “it is the only working railway in the world where the train travels down the middle of a State Highway and right through the middle of the town.”  This unique railway is the northern most train in New Zealand and holds significant cultural and historical importance.
