Wellington - the cultural capital

Packed with arts & national treasures, Wellington is a mecca for the traveller who enjoys culture and art.

Wellington is full of little art galleries and huge visual displays – a visit to the city can’t be done without checking out the Wellington art scene.

Located right on Wellington’s beautiful waterfront is the most visited museum in Oceania – Te Papa, Museum of New Zealand, with six stories of exhibitions showcasing New Zealand's diverse art and visual culture. Along the waterfront, held in a heritage building is the Museum of Wellington City and Sea, which nicely complements Te Papa’s national stories. Here you will learn bout the social and cultural history of Wellington.

There are 24 Wellington sculptures placed around the city. These are in central city, Wellington Botanic Gardens, and along the waterfront. Each sculpture has a special meaning and story as to why they are it has become public art for Wellington. 

Wellington is home to the National Collective Performing Arts, as well as the New Zealand International Arts Festival which excites the city every two years. It is also home to the Royal New Zealand Ballet, the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, and the New Zealand Opera.

There are many cultural and sporting events in Wellington throughout the year which contribute to making Wellington the cultural capital.  Some cultural events are the annual New Zealand International Comedy Festival and Documentary Edge Festival (Australasia’s leading documentary film festival).  The annual World Of WearableArt™ Awards Show is New Zealand’s largest arts show receiving over 50,000 attendees from around the world every year.
