1. Wellington Sevens (February)
This is New Zealand’s biggest sporting event where 35,000 thousands of fans embrace the passion and energy of Sevens rugby for two days of rugby and entertainment. The streets of Wellington become a carnival of colour as groups flock to the streets dressed in creative costumes.
2. NZ International Arts Festival (February)
With 24 days, more than 300 performances and nine world premieres, you’ll be spoilt for choice when planning your cultural getaway to Wellington for the New Zealand International Arts Festival. The Festival has been taking place on every even-numbered year since 1986 with performing and visual arts in outdoor and indoor venues across the city.
3. Jim Beam Homegrown (March)
Said to be New Zealand music’s biggest day, Homegrown is a full day event along Wellington’s waterfront. Six stages are set for over 40 bands and DJ’s, as well as hip hop and break-dancing competitions.
4. ASB Gardens Magic (March)
The ASB Gardens Magic Series is a free night time outdoor music concert series, central to the Wellington Summer City programme. This wonderful annual musical outdoor concert favourite sees 15 nights of practically every musical genre you can name. Up-and-comers and established stars bring the Botanic Gardens to life.
5. NZ International Comedy Festival (April/ May)
NZ International Comedy Festival is a highlight on the entertainment calendar. It is held over three weeks with comedy performances ranging from stand up, sketch, improvisation, theatre, children's and musical comedy – there is something for everyone to laugh at.
6. Visa Wellington On a Plate (August)
New Zealand’s largest and tastiest culinary festival is Visa Wellington On a Plate, encompassing a fortnight of culinary events and delectable dinner deals at over 100 of the region's finest eateries. Burger Wellington is an annual battle of the burger competition, where restaurants try to prove as creative with concept as they are with flavour, and consumers vote on their favourites.
7. Beervana (August)
Beervana is the largest annual beer festival in the country. This is a two-day event held at Wellington’s Westpac Stadium where beer-lovers attend a half-day session which involves plenty of craft beer tasting and seminars. In 2012 Beervana showcased 271 brews from 96 breweries!
8. World of WearableArt Award Show (WOW) (September/ October)
WOW is a world-class event showcasing incredible garments which are brought to life through breathtaking choreography, sophisticated lighting and an amazing soundscape.
9. Toast Martinborough (November)
Toast is an annual wine and food festival held in Martinborough, in the Wairarapa region. The festival is a day long where 10,000 food and wine lovers experience the world’s best wines and enjoy great music.
10. Royal New Zealand Ballet Seasons (Three Seasons: February, July, October)
The Royal New Zealand Ballet is a national treasure with 32 dynamic dancers from around the world. The RNZB has a reputation for strong and unique interpretations of full-length dramatic works.
