West Coast Events

The West Coast hosts a number of annual events that entertain its visitors.

Kumara Races
January
For an traditional country fair and race meeting, head to Kumara for their annual horse racing event. The day focuses around the main event – the Kumara Gold nuggets race. The prize is a genuine gold nugget and everyone wants to win. There’s stuff to keep the kids entertained, good music and great food on offer. This event welcomes locals and visitors alike.

Coast to Coast 
February
The world’s best athletes congregate on Kumara beach for this premier multi-sport race. Participants cycle, run and kayak their way across the South Island to Sumner Beach in Christchurch. The race spans 243 kilometers, with the winners taking only 10.75 hours to complete. Train hard and enter, or just come along to support some elite athletes.

WildFoods Festival 
March
A uniquely Kiwi food and wine experience, featuring the less common edibles from the region. Lots of entertainment, music, dancing and more! Visit one of New Zealand’s most famous festivals and try out a huhu grub, venison tongue, and even wasp larvae ice cream! An event not to be missed.

Greymouth Motorcycle Street Race 
October
In the heart of Greymouth, streets are closed off once a year to allow for an exciting motorcycle street race. Every Labour Weekend bike enthusiasts take to the streets and compete on the 1.3 kilometer circuit. It’s a full day of fun and action!
