Maori guides were the first to take visitors to see the world famous Pink & White Terraces at Tarawera in the 1800's. After the devastating eruption of Mount Tarawera destroyed the Terraces, the people moved to Whakarewarewa. Today the legacy of hosting visitors continues through the decendants of those first Maori guides who have passed on.
The families of Te Whakarewarewa Village welcome visitors into their homes and backyards, demonstrating the use of natural geothermal energy for cooking and bathing. Your hosts will share with you their geothermal lifestyle which continues to fascinate visitors today, as it did a hundred of years ago.
Visit Nga Mareikura (our admissions building) and immerse yourself in the history, traditions and culture of the people who live amongst the geothermal wonders of Mother Earth. You'll see the world through their eyes and experience their stories.
We look forward to your visit. Nau mai, haere mai (welcome).
