Spanning the North and South Islands, this trip hits spots that most people don’t even know exist.

Start your hidden gems journey in New Zealand’s northernmost region – Northland. The beautiful Tutukaka coast not only features one of the best dive spots in the world, but also rock pools with some of the clearest blue waters in New Zealand.

Head south to explore Rotorua's geothermal wonders and rich Maori culture, stopping en-route in Auckland – our largest city and home to a diverse range of experiences. Just an hour west of the city centre, the Tasman Sea’s wild surf crashes into black sand beaches like Piha, Muriwai and Bethells. Backing on to these beaches are the lush Waitakere Ranges Regional Park, home to waterfalls like Kitekite and Karekare Falls that few people know about.

There’s much to discover in Rotorua, including lesser known gems like Hamurana Springs and Kerosene Creek, featuring naturally heated water. Continue your central plateau adventures in Lake Taupo, where The Mine Bay Maori Rock Carvings are a must-see. Carved by a Maori sculptor, this beautiful piece of art can only be reached by boat and best viewed up close from a kayak.

Take the ferry to South Island from Wellington, south of Lake Taupo, to arrive in Picton. Nearby the golden coastline of Nelson region has numerous hidden gems, including Te Waikoropupū (or Pupu Springs) – New Zealand’s largest fresh water springs. This sunny region is also home to epic hikes in the Abel Tasman and Kahurangi National Parks. Tucked away in the south Canterbury landscape, thrill seekers would love rafting the Rangitata River or canyonging in Peel Forest Park before journeying into the West Coast and Wanaka. Both regions boast pristine national parks, glaciers and little known magic spots like the Blue Pools.

There’s no better place to end this trip than Fiordland, home to a World Heritage listed national park featuring gems that even the locals are yet to fully discover. Lake Quill is one of them.
