What does a cat o’ nine tails look like? Could you lift a ball and chain?
If you’re looking for somewhere to take the kids these school holidays, the Heritage Centre at Corrections' National Office is open and free.
The Heritage Centre tells the history of corrections in New Zealand. Visitors can enter a replica cell, view intriguing contraband finds, a display of uniforms through the decades and an early register from Invercargill Gaol recording an execution by hanging of a murderer.
A special exhibit looks at Corrections’ involvement in World War One and has multi-media displays showcasing Corrections’ modern facilities and focus on reducing re-offending.
