Six generations of Ludbrooks have lived on TupeTupe, the land known as the Taiamai garden and encircled by ancient pa sites shows clear evidence of the occupation of the Maori in pre European times.

In 1860 Samuel & Caroline Ludbrook purchased 2000 acres of Taiamai to become the first white settlers in Ohaeawai. Known as Tupe Tupe the land was part of the original Henry Williams estate.
Formed by volcanic eruptions the Taiamai plain, ringed by extinct volcanoes each featuring ancient pa-sites, was a rich and fertile garden for pre-European Maori. Te Morunga, an important Maori chief built and occupied Rua Hoanga pa still clearly seen today.

Developed as a dairying unit Tupe Tupe a 474 hectare beef and sheep farm uses modern farm practices and is managed by fifth generation Roger Ludbrook and family. Conservation plans to protect the waterways and wetlands and preserve the rich heritage of the Taiamai garden is underway.
