Picton For the Young at Heart

The gateway to the South Island, Picton is an important landmark to visit when traveling the country and has some beautiful places near by to visit.

Picton is the gateway to the South Island as does a good job of giving tourists who have just hopped off the Cook Strait Ferry a great first impression of the island. A modest town, the area surprisingly has a lot to offer to its visitors, particularly in terms of its surrounding natural environment.

My Top 4 Activities For The Young at Heart in Picton

1. Evening Kayak Cruise

BeachComber Sea Kayaking hold a guided kayaking trip during sunset which is a lovely way to explore the area at its most beautiful and peaceful time of day. You are taken from Picton foreshore and around various surrounding hidden coves and bays before arriving at Ngakuta Bay, where a BBQ is awaiting. And if that's not enough, the evening ends with some entertainment from a Fire Spinning Display! The trip is suitable for all levels of kayakers, even the first-timers and is $95 per person.

2. Marlborough Wine Tours

Marlborough is a good hours drive our of Picton but is a nice location to spend the day out during your stay in Picton. Marlborough wine tours offer a number of different tours ranging in price and duration so choosing a tour all depends on how much time and money you want to spend. Short morning and afternoon tours visit approximately 4 different wineries in the Marlborough region over a 4 hours period and actually start in Picton.

On the other end of the spectrum you can choose to join an All Day Specialty Tour, which involves visits to the regions best wineries, an exquisite 3 course lunch at a local bistro and an insight into the more historical and technical sides of the wine making industry. Not surprisingly, these tours are pricey costing from $140-$200 per person, but it is a fantastic day out with plenty of indulging to be had!

3. Visit the Seal Pups

Just north of Kaikoura, about an 1.5 hour drive out of Picton, dozens of seals pups from the Ohau Point fur seal colony make their way up the nearby stream to splash around under the waterfall, which has attracted many tourists to the area in the last couple of years to get a glimpse of the playful pups. The waterfall is a short 5 minute walk from the main highway and is now visited by a lot more tourists since the larger number of seal pups have made it their playground. I'd say it's definitely worth a trip if you're wanting an afternoon out and about.

4. A Scenic Cruise Through The Sounds Sunday Arvo

I personally can't think of a better way to spend a Sunday afternoon than relaxing on a scenic cruise through the beautiful waters of the Queen Charlotte Sound! Included in the cruise is a stop off at the Motuara Island Bird Sanctuary, then head across to the historical Ship Cove, and cruising past the Ruakaka Bay Salmon Farm as you head back to shore. This is just one of a number of cruises Beachcomber Cruises offer, so make sure you take a look at their website.
