Nelson's Beach Spots

A couple of beaches within a short drive or walk from the Nelson City, perfect for a bit of down time

Situated along the Coast the Nelson region has a beach to please everyone.

Starting East we have Cable Bay, a beautiful spot and only 25 minutes drive from Nelson city. There is a cafe open various hours in the summer for you to enjoy a scrumptious lunch, light snack or a coffee and slice.

There is a great walk way too, but be sure to check if it is open as it closes for certain times of the year. The beach itself is a mix of rocky areas and sneaky patches of sand, but good for swimming and snorkeling.

Glenduan is a short 15 minutes drive from the city and great for exploring. When the tide is out is it great for walking, there is a cave about half an hours walk east. But be sure to check the tides to make sure you have enough time to get there and back. There is a small playground and it is also the other end of the Cable Bay walkway.

Nelson city has the lovely Tahunanui Beach. A fabulous swimming spot no matter what the tide is doing. Plenty of spots for a fantastic picnic, and lots of restaurants and cafes within walking distance. There is a fun park with hydroslyding, bumper boats and mini golf.

There is go karting, a roller skating rink and giant slide. The modeler’s pond and train are great family activities also. There is a large playground stretching the length of the beach with something for all ages. Changing facilities are available by the café. At one end of the beach there is a dog exercising area.

Rabbit Island is a recreational reserve to the North West of Nelson and a short 20 minutes drive. There is a horse exercise area, dog exercise area and plenty of beach swimming and sunbathing. There are BBQ's there for you to enjoy and tables and sun shades. There are easy mountain bikes rides throughout the park and plenty of places for walking and exploring. Defiantly somewhere you can go for the whole day.

Ruby Bay is about 30 minutes drive from Nelson and a great beach spot. Lots of round stones at the top of the beach and when the tide is out you have the lovely soft sand. Perfect for walks and picnics and the shell spotter.

Nelson and surrounds have a beach for everyone, we hope you enjoy and remember to wear plenty of sun block!
