From waterfalls to snow-capped mountains and coastline dotted with wildlife, there's a huge range of walking and hiking opportunities in the Christchurch-Canterbury region. For a shorter day hike from the city, head to the Port Hills  that ring Christchurch for spectacular views of the Canterbury Plains. Take a guided glacier hike in the Mount Cook National park, or sign up for a backcountry adventure with a longer, multi-day hike in the area. Kaikoura has a number of beautiful hiking opportunities, one of the most popular being the easy Kaikoura Shoreline Walk - where you can spot fur seals and nesting bird colonies. Going with a guide can be worth it, as they can tailor a package to suit your needs - and show you some of the secret local gems on the way.
