Explore the scenic beauty of Lake Taupo on a lakeside walking trail, or walk suspended above bubbling mud pools at the Craters of the Moon.
The clear waters of beautiful Lake Taupo offer the ideal place for a lakeside stroll - walk between Little Acacia Bay and Rangatira Point, or stop for a picnic as you walk between Two Mile Bay and Five Mile Bay. The all-season Great Lake Trail is 71km (44m) and wraps around the forested shores of the lake. Easily accessed from central Taupo, the trail can be broken up into shorter sections to enjoy a shorter walk over an hour or a morning. If you're after more of a geothermal experience, head to the Craters of the Moon - a valley of boiling mudpools and hissing steam with a boardwalk suspended above.
This region is also home to the Tongariro Crossing, often labelled as 'one of the world's best day walks'. Journey past ancient lava flows, an active volcano crater, turquoise green lakes and panoramic views of the Central Plateau on this 19km (11.8m) one day hike.
