If you like the thrill of careering down a forest track or winding along a rocky ridge, then New Zealand is just the spot if you want to indulge in the sport of mountain biking. New Zealanders have taken to mountain biking with a passion. There are mountain bike trails everywhere. The 42 Traverse in the Tongariro National Park is fast developing a reputation and for the real adventure junkie there’s all-day downhill with alpine heli-biking.

But mountain biking doesn’t have to mean full-speed risk to life and limb riding. Cycling is a wonderful way to cover ground and stop when you like and fill your with the wonders of the natural world. You can explore a coast road or wander a wine trail; go cross-country or follow an old rail track. You have the freedom to do it as you wish; with the pleasure of your own company or sharing the wonders with a companion. Or you can take a tour. They’ll hire you a bike, give you tips and carry your luggage from one e stop to the next. All you have to do us cycle and look at the scenery. And that’s not too hard to do, is it?
