Akaroa accommodation & activities January 2012 & recent earthquake acitivity

Within 60-90mins drive of Christchurch airport the Akaroa/Banks Peninsula area is a fabulous destination in its own right. It has plenty of unique quality accommodation ranging from the only 5-star luxury Enviro-Gold awarded retreat to camping grounds & hostels.

With a fantastic range of activities, tours, restaurants & galleries in & around Akaroa, a quiet seaside resort for those who love relaxing, nature, sightseeing & wildlife, I recommend including Akaroa/Banks Peninsula area for a 2-3 night stay at the beginning or end of NZ travel arriving or departing from CHC. 
 
While the recent earthquakes in Christchurch have been felt & a few buildings closed as a precautionary measure there is minimal damage & the Akaroa/Banks Peninsula area is fully operational.
 
With accommodation shortages in & around the city centre & some people preferring to stay away from Christchurch city itself, Akaroa/Banks Peninsula has plenty to offer.
 
It is the alternative port for the summer cruise ships. Many of the passengers have  expressed their delight at this arrangement taking advantage of the opportunity to enjoy the quaint architecture & the extensive range of nature activities & tours many unique to the area .
 
They have been especially delighted by A Classic Ride, the only Honda Goldwing & Sidecar tours in New Zealand,  the chance to swim with the rare Hectors dolphins, Pohatu Penguin tours to the largest mainland colony in NZ, guided historic walks & more.
 
For those who prefer shopping malls, multi national fast food chains & hotels Akaroa is not the place to visit.
 
The Akaroa Summer Music Festival is coming up with a range of concerts the entertainment is guaranteed to be exceptional.
