For about five days each February the city of Napier in Hawke's Bay is transformed into Art Deco heaven. Napier is the place to be!
I have just experienced my first Geon Art Deco Weekend and I have to say - it's one of the most entertaining weekends, filled with a local enthusiasm that is utterly infectious.
The people of Napier are adorned in the most fabulous garb from the 1930's - everyone makes an effort to dress up and visitors are compelled to join in! There are a multitude of shops where you can hire or buy costumes and the most fabulous accessories from beads to boaters.
I think I saw over 100 vintage cars lining the streets over the weekend, these cars are the most well-loved and looked after specimens and many offer a ride for a donation. (see the attached pictures).
So you can sit on the sidelines and observe or dress up and get into the action - this is a must-do event on Hawke's Bays calendar.
I also experienced my first Geon Art Deco Weekend - my highlight along with the people watching and vintage cars was the War Birds Display on Friday night from Marine Parade. Very cool free event!
Hawke's Bay is the perfect year-round holiday destination. With a mediterranean climate of long hot summers and mild winters anytime is a good time to visit.
