Driving New Zealand in Winter

Driving New Zealand roads in winter can be tricky, but with our winter driving tips, you don’t have to worry about getting from A to B when it’s cold out.

Officially, winter in New Zealand is from June to August, but it’s not unusual to experience frost, rain, hail and even snow outside of these times. Wintery weather can make driving tricky and sometimes dangerous, but with a bit of common sense and preparation, you should be able to get wherever you need to go during winter. Here are our top winter driving tips:

Be Prepared
During winter, it’s not uncommon to have to stop and fit snow chains to your vehicle to get over a mountain pass, up a ski field road or through a particularly snowy stretch of highway.  If chains are required, you will be advised via signs or in person. If travelling in winter, always purchase or hire snow chains when you hire your car, motorhome or campervan and learn how to fit them before you depart! If you’re unsure, ask the customer service team at your rental outlet for assistance.

You should also look at the weather forecast and road closure warnings before you embark on a road trip in winter. Don’t ignore heavy snow warnings or road closure notifications!

Take your Time
You’re here to see the country, so take your time when driving in winter. Roads can be slippery with snow, frost or ice (which you often can’t see!). Drive to the speed limit unless conditions dictate that you should slow down. Use your common sense and take regular breaks.

Stock Up
Sometimes, with road closures or severe weather, you might not be able to get to where you intended. Ensuring your motorhome or campervan is well stocked with food, supplies and gas, you can still enjoy your holiday and stop off for an unplanned night somewhere entirely new!
