A great 3 day walk though the Cobb

Four of us set off to walk to the Fenella Hut to stay for two nights, at the end of the winter. Crisp, frosty conditions and after filling ourselves with pies from Motueka we drove into the Cobb and left the vehicle at the Trilobite Hut.

It was a steady 4 hour trip along the valley floor towards the Hut. Easy walking through bush and clearings. We passed Chaffey’s Shelter and then walked on up to the Cobb Hut. Lots of stops to enjoy the valley views.

The last half hour up to the hut is steeper, but nothing too hard, The hut is welcoming, and the wood fire soon heated it up. There was a good stack of firewood close to the hut, under cover, and the loo was in a great position down from the Hut. It had leadlights and a great view!

The middle day was spent walking up from the hut, towards a lake which is a swimming hole in the summer. A magical spot with great views, then down to Cobb Lake, along the side of the lake and then up through bush onto the top and over to Round Lake, which took about an hour and half. Unfortunately the weather wasn’t good enough to walk out onto the ridge to look into the Roaring Lion. We would have had a cup of tea up there, if I hadn’t forgotten the billy.

Another cosy night with 4 other trampers who had arrived, and then an easy walk out and back to more pies in Motueka. We met a couple with a small child, who were just walking into Chaffey’s Shelter for day walk. A good way to spend a Sunday.
