Known as Ka Roimata o Hinehukatere (“The Tears of Hinehukatere”) Maori legend tells us of a young woman, Hinehukatere who wanted to share her passion for climbing in the mountains with her lover Wawe.

Unfortunately, Wawe was no match for Hine on the slopes and fell to his death. The devastated Hinehukatere cried many, many tears that eventually formed the glacier.

While this story may seem a little far-fetched, Franz Josef Glacier does offer a feeling of other-worldliness and wonderment.

To explore this beautiful icy phenomenon make sure you stay in Franz Josef a few days and hike the glacier.
