This summer in New Zealand, there’s no better place to be than in the hills.
Lake Heron is at the heart of South Island high country. It boasts some of New Zealand’s most exciting guided hiking options in summer and heliski in winter.
Lake Heron Station has a strong family tradition, having been in the Todhunter family for four generations. Philip is one of the most experienced heliski pilots in New Zealand, whilst Anne initially trained as a lawyer and later retrained to become an internationally qualified Mountain and Ski Guide. Both Anne and Philip have spent many years helping others enjoy New Zealand’s mountains and backcountry.
Anne’s experience as a mountain guide has been key in developing Lake Heron’s unique guided hikes. “The Station Walk” is a leisurely three-day walking journey through Lake Heron Station.
“The Highland Hike” is a three-day journey through dramatic station country – more physically demanding but still achievable by anyone with a good level of fitness. In keeping with high country tradition, you will spend the evenings in a rustic candlelit atmosphere, enjoying delicious meals and great company. This is big station country – broad vistas, grand skies, pristine streams and clear air. The hike follows a remote route, used only by generations of station hands. No well-worn hiking trail, no signs, no route markers and no-one else!
Both trips combine station history, flora and fauna, and comfortable accommodation. They are about personal journeys, beautiful scenery and the best of high country hospitality.
Lake Heron Station is a spectacular 19,600 hectare high country station only two hours’ drive from Christchurch International Airport.
