Jason Stratford, the Sales & Marketing Manager for Australian Pacific Touring (APT) North America recently visited the Hobbiton Movie Set & Farm, travelling from Rotorua in just over an hours drive. The visit exceeded his expectations considering that the movie set has been completely rebuilt after the Lord Of The Rings Trilogy of movies and can now be seen as it appears in the Hobbit.
In September 1998 when Director Peter Jackson and New Line Cinema discovered the Alexander family farm during an aerial search for suitable film sites for The Lord of the Rings film trilogy, Hobbiton emerged as the site because of the fantastic views and rolling countryside of the farm that closely resembled that of The Shire.
The set was rebuilt in 2011 for the new Hobbit films and is now permanent, complete with hobbit holes, gardens, bridge, Mill and The Green Dragon Inn.
The crew at the Hobbiton Movie Set are extremely knowledgeable about the filming location and they explain with enthusiasm that they have a host of gardeners year round just to keep the grounds looking pristine. It is one of the few places in the world that you can walk among a realistic film set like this. As it is also a working farm: there are sheep and other animals scattered around the place so even a non-Hobbit loving guest would enjoy the picturesque and authentic New Zealand farm experience. After you visit Bag End, where Frodo and Bilbo’s adventures began, you can get lost among the many hobbit holes including a visit to the Mill and the Party Tree. At the end of the tour you stop in at the Green Dragon Inn, where served behind the bar are traditional ales, cider and non alcoholic ginger beer, all brewed exclusively on location. A complimentary drink is included in the tour and they also have scones made on site which are to die for!
APT offer the Hobbiton Movie Set & Farm Tour as part of the Freedom of Choice touring options offered to guests on their Escorted Coach Touring program. Freedom of Choice enables you to choose what you would like to do on certain days you are on tour. As an example, if you are in the mood for the spa you could choose to do that rather than touring one day. And you don't pay any extra! It's a way to customise your escorted touring experience based on your personality and mood at the time. The Hobbiton Movie set tour is one of a handful of Middle-Earth themed options available on this program.
Jason believes that a visit to the Hobbiton Movie Set & Farm location is a an absolute must see for anyone, and not only fans of the Middle-Earth movies! It's a very special and wonderful day out Down Under
