Murdoch James Estate
Murdoch James wines are handmade in New Zealand.
The hub of Martinborough wines, tastings, information, wine tours, and basically anything you need to know ... http://www.martinboroughwinecentre.co.nz/
New Zeland produces less than 3% of the world's wine, and Martinborough less than 1% of New Zeland's wine. It's fair to say, Martinborough is as boutique as it gets. Yet if you only have a day to spare trying the delights of the region, then your first port of is The Martinborough Wine Centre located in the heart of the square.
Most vineyards and wineries in Martinborough remain family owned, and as such, with families being families, are not always open throughout the week. But no despair! The Wine Centre always has a range of local wines from producers (some without cellar doors at all) that you can taste - for FREE. The friendly staff are always informative and go that extra mile to source lesseer known, or rarer wines - just for you.
Yesterday I was at the Wine centre, and managed to sneak a taste of the terroir-driven wines of Martinborough's Te Muna road. This was like enjoying a mini art exhibition - of taste. Six different producers making up about a dozen different wines. Te Muna road is off the beaten track - even for a local girl like me - so I was in conniptions of vinous delight to have the opprtunity to try this range of wines, all at once.
Thank you Wine Centre - you manage to keep both wine producers and touristy imbibers happy alike!
A visit to Murdoch James will quickly show why this vineyard is regarded by many as offering the most comprehensive winery experience in Martinborough & Wairarapa. Tours, cafe and tastings are all available.
