Originally named Koputai by Kai Tahu, Port Chalmers and the surrounding bays offer dramatic views of Otago’s harbour and coastal landscape.
Once Australasia's third largest port, this rich legacy has left Port Chalmers with a collection of historic blue stone buildings and a collection of maritime artifacts housed in the Regional Maritime Museum.
Modern commerce proceeds amid a charming village feel, a village now home to many of Dunedin’s artisans. Stroll the streets to explore the specialist galleries and fashion studios where artists, designers and crafts people can be seen at work. Absorb the history or just take time out in the cafes and legendary pubs.
Port Chalmers is home to one of New Zealand’s much loved artists, Ralph Hotere, with a fine collection of his work hanging in the quaint Careys Bay Hotel.
Dunedin is located on the South East coast of the South Island. It is a city nestled in tree-clad hills at the head of a spectacular harbour.
