West of Canterbury Plains rises Mount Hutt, home to a commercial alpine ski area with the largest skiable area in the South Island and the longest ski season.

Mt Hutt ski area caters for a wide range of skiers and it is a is very family-friendly ski field. The magic carpet lift located at the beginners learning area is great for young children.

Once you have got the basics the next step is taking the quad chair and try your way down the gentle Highway 72, which is wide as a highway and slowly takes you down back to base.

There are many intermediate runs and some good advanced runs for those looking for some steep and adrenaline pumping powder action.

Most visitors to the mountain stay in nearby town, Methven, which is about 35 minuted drive, as there is no accommodation on the mountain itself.

If you take a 4WD car hire from Christchurch you will have reliable wheels to drive through the steep 13km access road, prone to closure in poor weather.
