The Whitianga Scallop Festival held anually in September, began in 2005 and is timed for the start of the scallop season. The Festival is a weekend of indulgence, with over 50 food and wine stalls, seafood demonstrations and cook-offs, scallop shucking and other competitions, as well as live entertainment. On Friday and Saturday nights, Whitianga’s restaurants and cafes join in the spirit with their own specialty seafood dishes.

White Island is one of the most fascinating and accessible volcanoes on earth, carrying with it an A grade level of scientific importance. As New Zealand’s only live marine volcano, scientists and volcanologists worldwide are attracted by its unique features. Walking on White Island is like walking on the moon. Virtually no vegetation survives the harsh acidic environment inside the crater walls. Instead, lush beds of yellow and white sulphur crystals grow amongst hissing, steaming, bubbling fumaroles.
