There is fun and adventure galore to be had in New Zealand’s deep south, which makes it the perfect place to bring the kids.
Southland, comprising the Catlins, Invercargill and Gore, offers something for all the family. Spend a day at Invercargill’s Splash Palace, which has a southern coastal theme and boasts a leisure pool with waves and sprays and a toddlers’ pool. The kids will love the water slide, and the spa pool and steam room are sure to be a hit with the adults.
Exploring the coast is a great way to spend a family day out. Take a picnic and head to the beach or observe sea birds unique to this area along coastal walkways. Invercargill also has around 150 parks and reserves ideal for a range of outdoor pursuits. Cycle, walk, bird-watch, you name it. The kids will love the chance to get close to nature. In The Southland Museum and Art Gallery in Queens Park they can get even closer, with a rare opportunity to hold a tuatara.
If you’re down this way during the July school holidays, Kidzone is a must-do. The five-day event comprises activities galore to keep the kids happy.
Up the road in Gore, you and the kids will love the chance to explore parks and gardens on foot or by bike. Just 10 minutes’ drive from town is Dolamore Park, which has an excellent playground and is a great spot for summer picnics.
There are plenty of family-friendly restaurants and cafes around the region, and you’ll be spoiled for choice when it comes to accommodation.
Whatever you’re planning to do, bring the kids and grandparents and savour a holiday you’ll all treasure forever.
