The historic town of Oamaru features a unique blend of Victorian architecture and New Zealand’s smallest penguins.
About Oamaru
Oamaru is located in the Waitaki District on the East coast of the South Island only 1.5 hours’ drive from Dunedin. The stunning coastline and landscapes, wildlife and architecture contribute to the unique aspects of the town and make it a great destination to visit year round.
Oamaru Blue Penguin Colony
Oamaru is home to the world’s smallest penguins and can be seen at dusk at the Oamaru Blue Penguin Colony. During the day you can see the breeding colony and walk around and learn about the penguin’s life cycle and protection/conservation policies. The night time is the best time to view the blue penguins when they make their way from the ocean and cross the beach. There is an outdoor viewing area to watch the birds which can range in numbers between 30 to 250 dependent on the time of year. It is a magical experience to see these little birds and top attraction if you are visiting Oamaru.
Architecture and culture
A collection historic Victorian architecture lines the streets of Oamaru. You can take a walking tour to learn about the buildings like the Criterion Hotel, Connel and Clowes, and Union Building all of which date back to the 1800s. Each year the Oamaru Victorian Heritage Celebration features a week of Victorian fashion, activities and events to immerse yourself in Victorian culture. The Penny Farthing Race is a fun event to learn more about the historic bikes and it is part of the celebration festivities. The Victorian architecture and culture adds a unique flair to Oamaru, New Zealand’s only Victorian town.
