An easy drive (45 minutes) north of Christchurch you will find the Waipara Valley wine region.
Waipara is the unknown secret within New Zealand’s wine industry. And now the secret is out! Producing more than 250,000 cases annually (and growing) Waipara wines regularly take top honours at competition, especially Rieslings and Pinot Noirs.
Waipara has over 20 wineries and their summertime wine trail takes in eight cellar doors. Here you can drop in; taste wines and sometimes have a meal, a lunch platter or a coffee. Other wineries invite tastings by appointment.
A real treat and a fantastic way to sample all that the region has to offer is to enjoy the Waipara Valley Wine and Food Festival, which is a great day out for all the family. It’s a fantastic opportunity to savour a superb selection of local wines and foods.
So impress your friends, maybe even the boss by stocking a Waipara wine but better still include Waipara in your next visit to Christchurch and Canterbury.
District Tourism Organisation that promotes the Alpine Pacific Triangle Touring Route. Includes the spa village of Hanmer Springs, Waipara Valley wine region and Kaikoura.
