A geomorphic and world unique valley can be visited on an easy and wind sheltered path, leading over, around and under the boulders.

“Wairere Boulders” offers scenery that cannot be viewed anywhere else on the planet. The geomorphic formation of a 1.6 km long valley with thousands of “fluted” basalt boulders is world unique and can only be seen in Northland of New Zealand. This type of fluting occurred thanks to the existence of kauri trees releasing tannin into the soil. The sizes of the boulders at Wairere (up to 30 metres) are far greater than boulders of other valleys formed in a similar way. The valley, now open as a nature park, is accessible through a footpath (featuring 22 engineered wooden structures) leading visitors under around and over the boulders.
