Hagley Park, Christchurch
The home-grown event continues to get bigger and bigger; thrilling and captivating audiences during the 10-day festival of fun, laughter and chaos. The world’s best street and stage performers turn New Zealand’s second-largest city into one big, brash street party.
A sell-out each year, festival performers entertain more than 300,000 people with juggling, stand-up comedy, acrobatics and contortionism. Beautiful Hagley Park becomes ‘Busker Park’ with over 500 hours of circus, street and comedy shows. With strictly-for-adults shows at the Casino and the Tip Top Buskers Kid Pitch in the Botanic Gardens, there really is something for everyone to enjoy.
One of the most popular events in Christchurch’s calendar, it’s a great time to visit and to see how this vibrant city is rebuilding itself. New developments are popping up all over the city and its outskirts, demonstrating the community’s strength and resilience in the face of the series of earthquakes that have shaken the Garden City.
The Re:Start shopping area is an innovative project that has seen shipping containers being converted into shops, cafes and even banks! And the city’s nightlife certainly hasn’t been silenced, with quirky, lively pop-up bars appearing.
Christchurch is also the ideal base to explore the Canterbury region, with its majestic peaks, thundering surf and lush countryside. Arthur’s Pass National Park is within easy reach, where mountains and valleys straddle the Southern Alps and there is a huge variety of landscapes to admire, from alpine meadows to native rainforest.
