This legendary international event takes place in the stunning Southern Alps above Wanaka on the South Island. Fifty athletes from around the world will gather for the unique adrenaline-fuelled competition for the leading big mountain and freestyle skiers and boarders, and will battle it out for the World Heli Challenge crown.

Helicopters allow access to the ultimate snow conditions and terrains, where the athletes demonstrate their skills, speed and aerial technique. They compete in two intense days of competition during a two-week window, which enables the event to run in the best weather and snow conditions. And all the action will be captured on film as a photography and short film competition will run alongside the World Heli Challenge.

The athletes will have the opportunity to explore the stunning Lake Wanaka region and experience the adventure activities that the South Island is famous for, including bungy-jumping, sky-diving and jet-boating. Tranquil Lake Wanaka is 45 kilometres long and its clear blue waters are ideal for kayakers, sailors and jet-boaters to explore.

Wanaka is world-renowned for its superb skiing and snowboarding at Cardona and Treble Cone, cross-country skiing at Snow Farm and heli-skiing in the Harris Mountains. But Wanaka is also a year-round destination with activities such as fishing, hiking, canyoning, climbing and skydiving. It is also the ideal base to visit the nearby towns of Queenstown, Cromwell and Alexandra. With accommodation ranging from luxury lodges and boutique B&Bs, to backpackers and holiday parks, Wanaka is an inviting holiday location.
