Urupukapuka Island, Northland & Bay of Islands

Set in stunning coastal surrounds, the Urupukapuka Island Archaeological Walk is a great way to learn about the area's mysterious history.

 

The five-hour island walk is designed in a clockwise direction, and may be joined at most of the larger bays. This track generally follows the outer edge of the island passing various archaeological features.

 

The track can be best joined from Otehei, Urupukapuka, Cable, Indico and Oneura/Paradise Bays.

 

Finish off a day of exploring on the gorgeous beach that is perfect for relaxing or snorkelling.

Getting there

  • Passenger ferries go from Paihia and Russell to Otehei Bay every day in summer.
  • Water taxis run on demand year round.

 

Need to know

  • Bay of Islands Maritime and Historic Park bylaws apply.
  • Rubbish is not collected so you will need to take your rubbish with you. 
  • There is a campsite if you wish to stay overnight.
