If you're looking for a full day or two outdoors, you can't go past the Cape Brett Track. Traversing native bush and tall coastal ridges, this 8hr one-way hike incorporates spectacular views over the Bay of Islands, Cavalli Islands and Poor Knights Islands. Look out for dolphins and whales before reaching the Cape Brett Lighthouse & Department of Conservation hut that's at the end of the track.
An easy access walk that takes about half a day is the Bay of Islands Coastal Walkway. Following the coast from Opua to Paihia, this 8 hour-return walk takes in pleasant views over the Bay of Islands, white sandy beaches and a mangrove boardwalk.
