Brunner, one of NZ's earliest coal mines, was discovered in 1848 and the first comercial mine opened in 1864. Coke and bricks were made here and the beehive coke ovens are a rare and impressive industrial monument. Outside viewing is available at all times; noticeboards explain the ruins and remains.
