From Lake Wanaka's arid shores we drive through the massive Matukituki valley to the entrance of Mt. Aspiring National Park, world heritage area.
We cross the swing bridge into the beech forest, past cascading waterfalls tumbling down into narrow river chasms, along the hanging valley undulating gently up into alpine herb fields of flowers to lunch. The world's only alpine parrot, the Kea's home is here.
A 260 metre waterfall is opposite us and from our safe lunch spot, we soak up the panorama of the active faces of the glacier occasionally calving ice avalanches to the valley floor. Our guides will show you Rob Roy's secrets.
