Gunyah is Historic Places Cat. II listed building. The house is very original, even retaining some of its first wallpaper and has been furnished throughout with an extremely rare and important collection of early New Zealand furniture. There are also seven very interesting outbuildings some of which pre-date the house itself, including a granary, stables and wagon shed.
The grounds were laid out formally in 1912 when the house was built and have subsequently been extended. There are large rhododendrons, exotic trees, a native forest and even a kauri and the original house orchard.
The owner, William Cottrell won the NZ Montana Book Award in 2007 for his impressive 600 page reference book "Furniture of the NZ Colonial Era 1830-1900"
