The large brick building also has Category One heritage status with the Palmerston North City Council.
Visits are at present by arrangement, or at open days. The two large British Polar engines are a special feature and may be started by arrangement.
The power station especially attracts those interested in industrial heritage and vintage machinery. However, it has also served as a unique live performance theatre, as an art gallery and as an unusual meeting venue.
The building also adjoins the historic Terrace End Cemetery.
