Wellington's Cable Car Museum tells the colourful story of New Zealand's only remaining public cable car system.
This award-winning museum tells the story of the iconic Wellington cable car system and associated social history. It houses a nationally significant heritage transport collection including two of the three original grip cars which date back to the 1900s. Catch up on the service’s colourful history, marvel at the machinery in the old winding room or climb aboard one of the old grip cars.
The museum is located in the original winding house for the cable car system which is just a few metres from the upper terminus and is close to a lookout with spectacular views over Wellington.
Open daily except Christmas Day; free admission.
