The West Coast Wildlife Centre is the official home to the incubation and captive rearing program for New Zealand’s most endangered kiwi – the Rowi and Haast tokoeka. It is an all weather indoor activity in Franz Josef Glacier.
The West Coast Wildlife Centre not only provides specialist husbandry care to help save the kiwi from extinction, but also offers visitors with an educational experience looking at the fight for kiwi survival. The experience includes a chance to see Rowi in a forest, walk-through setting, together with a ‘behind the scenes tour of the incubation and rearing facility, along with interactive activities, wildlife films, a glacier attraction and a West Coast story telling area. Cafe Wild opens daily at 8.30am, grab a coffee, fresh baking or a packed lunch. We offer free wireless internet with any drink purchased. Our Gift Shop offers a wide variety of tempting gifts for the discerning traveller. Kiwi attraction opens daily from 9.00am.
