Mr Hatricks Motor vessel Wairua (spirit) was built in Poplar London UK by Yarrow &Co and launched into service on the Whanganui River in November 1904 to become part of the famous Hatrick & Co river fleet. Wairua was one of the vessels that pioneered the Pipriki to Taumarunui section of the river and was associated with the transport of settlers and supplies for the Bridge to Nowhere settlement in the Mangapurua Valley.
The Wairua is a part of New Zealands unique maritime history. It is propelled by the screw in tunnel system, fore runner of the jet boat, which enables Wairua to operate in very shallow water.
Now faithfully restored Wairua offers all types of cruises by arrangement, for smaller groups, on the lower Whanganui River.
