The area is home to many land activities that are sure to please all visitors to Taupo, from the adrenalin junkies, to families, and even those who are after a bit of peace and relaxation.
Being local to the area ourselves we thought we’d share a few of our Taupo “Must Do’s”:
Lake Taupo boasts some of the best mountain bike trails in the world. Most of the tracks follow bush trails around the surrounding mountains and lake, and offer many different options for all ranges of fitness, experience and budgets. So whether you are after a gentle ride or a heart pumping cycle be sure to give these guys a call and they will make sure you get the best biking experience Taupo has to offer: Tongariro Mountain Biking, Wairakei Tourist Park, Rapid Sensations Mountain Biking, Kaimanawa Heli-Biking, Pedaltours, or Mountain Bike Station.
Taupo makes for a great base camp if you plan on skiing or snowboarding your holiday away. The region is home to some of New Zealand’s most popular ski fields. Mt Ruapehu offers great skiing and snowboarding, with the longest vertical drop in Australasia. The Whakapapa and Turoa ski fields also have the highest lift access terrain in the country. With a skiable area of 1050 hectares there is a variety of terrain to suit any level of skier or snowboarder. If you are heading up the mountain make sure you have all the right gear from one of Taupo’s snow specialists: Gordon’s Outdoor Equipment, Whakapapa Rentals, Turangi Ski, Turoa Rentals, Pointons Ski Shop, or Urban Edge.
Attractions & Tours
The Lake Taupo area has plenty of activities and attractions available all year round and for all ages and interests. The Huka Honey Hive is NZ’s largest showcase of honey products, has free tastings of honey, and you can visit their live beehives. The Riverside Market happens every Saturday morning in Taupo and is a great place to get fresh local produce, arts and crafts, clothing, and so much more. Action World Taupo is a whole new way for the whole family to have fun with Trapezes, swings, jungle bars, climbing wall, jousting bridges, tightrope walking, and bouncy slides. Other great places you must visit is the Kitenui Safari Park, Taupo Horse Treks, and Mind Junction.

Taupo is a nature lover’s paradise with an abundance of walks and hikes that cover a range of environments such as alpine terrain, lake and river trails, and tracks in thermal and historic areas. The Tongariro Alpine Crossing is considered one of the best one-day hikes in the world and is a must for anyone travelling to New Zealand.
