“At Lavender’s Green we celebrate the natural beauty of lemons – their exquisite taste, visual beauty and health-giving properties. We produce a range of high-quality lemon based products including curds, chutneys, pickles and cordials all made from ingredients grown on our South Wairarapa farm.
It is our desire to capture the beauty and simplicity of country life and country provisions. Our experience of living and working at Te Puhi, a beautiful 1860’s farm house set in rambling gardens and paddocks, mostly planted in native forest and lemon trees, is predominately one of gratitude. To be surrounded by so much beauty and to be immersed in the magic of nature is something we want to share with others. We do this in two ways. We use the fruits we grow and we preserve them, in season, to sell to others who appreciate the care and craft that goes into each product, but who might not have the time to do the same themselves. And secondly, we invite people to visit and tour our place of beauty.
Everything we make is made in small batches for maximum freshness and our products are gluten-free. We use organically grown and spray-free lemons and limes. We grow our own Meyer lemons and we have chosen this variety for their sweet and tangy flavour as well as their ability to withstand the sometimes frosty Wairarapa winters. We also receive generous support from a loyal band of local lemon growers who give us their organically grown lemons in return for Lavender’s Green products. It’s a real community effort. Often it takes a village to raise a decent lemon.
Our limes are Tahitian Limes and they too stand up to the frosty winter – although we have planted them in paddocks on high ground, where they are carefully protected with shelter trees. Our fruit are seriously indulged. Being organically grown we really look after the soil by constant mulching and feeding it with manure. Our worm count is off the board and they provide good fodder for our constantly scratching Brown Shaver chooks – the egg manufacturers who make the most divinely rich, orange- yolked eggs anyone is likely to see. These eggs are a key ingredient in our highly sought after Lemon Curd and Lime Curd.
We welcome visitors to our farm and during their tour our visitors will see the lemon groves, the chook runs and vegetable gardens, a very old, charming, colonial house, an equally old orchard and for the sports fan, a full size rugby post suitable for practising goal kicking. You can pretend you are Jonny Wilkinson or All Black Danny Carter as you kick the ball over the bar. In paddocks around the post, you can see our organically farmed sheep and the remnants of the original lavender paddock.
We are part of the small farming town of Featherston, which is considered the gateway to the Wairarapa. This a rural region 55 minutes from New Zealand’s capital city Wellington (dubbed the coolest little capital in the world by Lonely Planet 2010) and on the east coast of New Zealand. It is a region famous both nationally and internationally for its artisanal food, olive oils and award-winning wines.
Lavender’s Green cordials and condiments are sold nationwide in New Zealand and in selected gourmet food stores in Australia, including the five David Jones Food Halls.
The farm is open for visits Monday to Friday 8.30am to 5pm and weekends by appointment. It is sensible to ring and book before you visit. A traditional morning or afternoon tea is available with prior arrangement.
