Lake Wanaka
Not far from the action of Queenstown, Wanaka is a place of peace and tranquility, with a slower pace. The nearby ski resort Cardrona is family-friendly with gentle beginner’s slopes and ski programmes for the littlies. With excellent natural snow, it’s especially good for improving intermediate technique. Treble Cone, Wanaka’s closest field, features long trails, challenging advanced runs, natural half-pipes and a terrain park.
If your ideal winter holiday includes more than snow play, Wanaka has loads to offer. Spend your days off the mountain hiking, cycling, fishing or take a scenic flight. Stuart Landsborough’s Puzzling World is a must-do for kids young and old. If you venture over to Queenstown for the day, make sure you stop at the iconic Cardrona Hotel and historic Arrowtown to soak up some of the region’s rich gold mining history.

Other ski fields
Situated 35 kms from Wanaka are Snow Park and Snow Farm. Snow Park is a boutique mountain resort and dedicated terrain park covering 60 acres. Suitable for first-time skiers/snowboarders, it’s also great for family snow play with tubing and sledding. Seasoned pros will love the challenge of the jumps, rails, boxes, New Zealand’s only quarter-pipe and Olympic-sized half-pipe.
Snow Farm (pictured above) is New Zealand’s only commercial cross country ski area. Boasting 50 kms of groomed trails and day and night skiing, it caters for all abilities. As one of the best cross country ski areas in the Southern Hemisphere it often plays host to international cross country ski teams. If you want to try something different, hire some snow shoes or take a dog sled tour with Quiet Running Adventures.
