The Pinnacles Track climbs through ruggedly beautiful mountain ranges in the Coromandel Peninsula. It's one of New Zealand's most popular overnight walks.
Located upriver from Thames in the stunning Kaueranga Valley, The Pinnacles track follows original steps constructed in the early 1900s for packhorses transporting natural resources through lush forest. The track remains rich with history from the days of kauri loggers, gum diggers and gold miners who plundered the area for many years.
Day 1, Kauaeranga Roadend > Pinnacles Hut, 5km
After reaching the Kauaeranga Valley road carpark, walk to the swingbridge, cross the river and continue to Webb Creek before following the historic packhorse and kauri loggers' route to the hydro Camp. From here, you'll enjoy spectacular views of the east coast beaches as you follow along a ridge before following the signs down to the Pinnacles Hut.
Day 2, Pinnacles Hut > Pinnacles > Kauaeranga Roadend, 7km
The Pinnacles Hut is situated on one of the highest peaks in the Coromandel Forest Park, but to catch the ultimate beauty of the valley, climb to the very top of the Pinnacles first thing this morning. This portion of the hike takes around 40 minutes. Once there, enjoy the 360-degree views of both coasts of the Coromandel, the Bay of Plenty and the Hauraki Gulf and Plains - at sunrise, this is a truly magical experience. Take your time with photographs before carefully climbing back down to the hut to pick up your pack. From here you'll follow the same route as yesterday back to Kauaeranga Roadend.
During the walk
The Pinnacles Hut is a modern and serviced Department of Conservation hut situated on one of the highest peaks in the valley. The hut has 80 bunks as well as cooking, heating, showering and toileting facilities.
