The Groynes Dog Park - 160 Johns Rd, Northwood

Whether you’re in Christchurch for a short time before heading on a long journey or looking to explore the city, there’s no need to leave the dog behind…

North South Holiday Park in Christchurch is one of the few accommodation providers in Christchurch who are pet friendly and The Groynes Recreation Park is a short 5 minute drive from the park or 15 minutes from the city centre where you and your pup can have a great run around in the Dog Park.

The Groynes Dog Park is a magnificent and vast securely fenced park with plenty of room to throw sticks, go for a leisurely walk or an energetic run. The sound of native birds overpowers the distant hum of the traffic on SH1 as you meander through the 8 fenced areas within the park, passing beautiful New Zealand shrubbery and towering Poplar trees. If you hang around until dusk, the sky boasts spectacular 360’ uninterrupted views of sunsets over the surrounding mountains.

Set amongst 85 hectares of reserve, the park also has picnic areas, playgrounds, a stream and lake for fishing, boating or feeding the ducks, BBQ facilities and two walking trails (although dogs must be kept on a lead at all times on these tracks). The trails are flat and well maintained and there are short relaxing walks that follow the lakes and streams.

A spring fed stream shoulders the dog park where your pooch can enjoy hours of fun swimming and chasing sticks in the knee-deep water under a canopy of trees. The area also boasts three fenced agility/obstacle courses including one for small dogs.

Watch the kids teach your dog new tricks whether it be climbing new heights or jumping through tyres, it’s a great laugh and good exercise for all! Doggy doo dispensers, rubbish bins and fresh drinking water taps are also provided throughout the park, just remember to bring a plastic bag to clean up if your dog makes a mess.

Whether you choose to explore the park off the lead or make use of one of the walking tracks, it makes for a peaceful, enjoyable and fun outing for the whole family!

Opening Hours: Gates open from 7am–7pm. During daylight saving hours, gates are open from 7am–9pm. The park is monitored by the Christchurch City Council Rangers and fees will be charged to release vehicles left past the closing time.

Getting there: The Groynes can be accessed just off State Highway 1 (also known as Johns Road) at Northwood, a short 7 minutes drive North East of Christchurch International Airport.
